Most of us have used escalators hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times without giving much thought to the machinery beneath our feet.
But here's an interesting question:
Where do the steps go when they disappear at the top or bottom?
Surprisingly, they don't stack up or disappear into a storage area. Every step travels around a continuous loop, guided by chains, wheels and specially designed tracks hidden inside the escalator.
And that's just the beginning!
A few things you might not know:
- The steps remain level because their wheels follow different guide tracks.
- The moving handrail has its own drive arrangement, coordinated with the steps.
- Those brushes beside the steps are safety deflectors, not shoe cleaners.
- The grooves in the steps fit into comb-shaped plates at the landings.
- Some modern escalators can even recover electricity while carrying passengers downhill.
Have you ever noticed the handrail moving faster or slower than the steps?
Do you prefer escalators or lifts when travelling between floors?
And have you ever seen an escalator behaving strangely, stopping unexpectedly or making unusual noises?
There's much more interesting engineering involved than meets the eye.
